Halloween is a holiday of vampires, witches and ghosts which until recently has been widely celebrated only in the USA, but now it is getting more popular in Europe and little by little in the CIS countries. What do we know about this holiday, which roots has it got?

For thousands of years in October different peoples celebrate different holidays and festivals. Halloween is one of the oldest festivals in the world. Its history goes back millennia, from the Celtic festival of Samhain, Roman Pomona Day (goddess of plants) and Christian All Saints' Day. It strangely combines a Celtic tradition of honouring evil spirits and a Christian tradition of honouring all the saints.

Today, we have just funny fascinating traditions remained from the ancient pagan holiday. On the overnight into 1 November there is a tradition to dress up in costumes of evil forces and organize masquerades.
